Years ago, before everyone had credit cards, layaway was a great way to put gifts on hold for the holidays and make payments. Since the recession has made many people max out their credit cards by lowering credit limits and declining applicants, layaway options are again becoming popular among retail stores to entice customers. So, here’s our top seven store picks that are once again offering layaway options:

1. Best Buy – Instore only. 25% down payment plus 5% layaway fee. Item/s must total $250 or more. Make payments every two weeks.

2. Home Shopping Network offers “Flexpay, better than Layaway” – Online only. Buy electronics now (HDTVs, Printers, Wii’s, Computers, etc), pay off over time – with no fees or interest.

3. Kmart – Available instore or online. Pay down payment of $15 or 10% (whichever is greater) plus $5 service fee, and make payments every two weeks.

4. QVC – spread out payments for 6 months on electronics (including Bose, iPod, Game Bundles, HDTVs and more) with Easy Pay.

5. Sears Layaway is “the easy way to pay” – Available instore or online. Pay down payment of $20 or 20% (whichever is greater) plus $5 service fee, and make payment every two weeks.

6. ToysRUs – Instore only. 20% down payment plus $5 service fee. 50% must be paid within 45 days and the final balance within 90 days.

7. Walmart is offering “Christmas Layaway” for Toys, Electronics and Fine Jewelry instores. 10% down payment plus $5 service fee. Total purchase must be over $50 (each item over $15). Final payment and pickup must be made by December 16th, 2011.

New! 8. Gordmans 6 week layaway option is subject to $50 minimum purchase, $5 processing fee and 25% initial down payment.

I literally shopped til I dropped…

Many of you know that I live in a small town, so I have to drive 20 miles to shop, and even then I don’t have a whole lot of shopping options (just Walgreens*, Walmart and Target).   I was ecstatic to spend the last two days in Sioux Falls, South Dakota shopping with a friend at stores that aren’t available to me here near hickville.

Here’s the Deals I took advantage of…

Gordman’s – Extra 50% off Clearance Prices for Cardholder members

JCPenney’s – Redeemed my $10 off $10 coupon I received in the mail

Kmart – Double Coupons! Common Sense with Money lists the Best Deals and Coupon Matches – exp 10/3

Kohl’s – 15% off Everything with Kohl’s Charge – available with postcard instore or online at Kohls.com with Coupon Code: OCT15OFF – exp 10/7

T.J.Maxx – got some name brand clothes on clearance – can you believe I didn’t buy any shoes?

The Empire Mall is really a nice mall – the layout is somewhat confusing, but it is abundant with great shops. Plus we had fun trying out the photo booth and massaging chairs!

And then there’s the Food I don’t normally get to divulge in…

Cinnabon – the one I used to visit in Omaha is now closed, so this was a real treat

Cracker Barrel – I had never eaten at one of these restaurants before, and it was so good – tasted better than homemade! Plus the gift shop included some neat retro toys and candy. We were too stuffed to order dessert, but the Double Fudge Coca-Cola cake looked so good! I found the recipe online and plan to make it tomorrow!

Old Chicago – my absolutely favorite pizza place – hint, eat during “happy hour” when you can get stuffed on the appetizer specials which include mini pizzas.

To top off the fun trip, I had enough Choice Hotels points to redeem for a free hotel room for the night. I wish I had remembered that I had free Fandango movie gift certificates to redeem that I won from Blingo.  Plus my friend won some money at the casino so the trip was quite profitable for him! Now, I am exhausted and ready for bed!

*Walgreens currently has some great deals that I took advantage of this week as well.  Deal Seeking Mom lists the deals of the week.
