Breaking unhealthy lifestyle habits can be difficult, especially for young adults. We often think we have all the time in the world to turn things around and that can make it difficult to start making healthier choices.

We think, “Oh, I'll just start next year.” But time flies and the years go by faster than we think. That's why there's no time like the present to start changing your life to incorporate healthier habits.

Here are five tips to help you get started.

1. Eat More Fruits and Veggies

Adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet is a challenge for a lot of people, but it's so beneficial for your health. So, what kind of fruits and vegetables should you be consuming for optimal health? Load up on non-starchy vegetables, as they're usually low in calories and high in fiber and nutrients.

Choosing whole, unprocessed carbs and eating fatty fish more often can also help you kick your health game into high gear. Additionally, eating from a smaller bowl and adding fruits to your oatmeal in the morning can help give you an extra boost and keep you from feeling sluggish come mid-morning.

2. Exercise Regularly

You don't have to be a gym rat in order to get regular exercise. Instead, start off by walking or jogging for 30 minutes per day at least five days a week. Regular exercise can make you feel more energized and help you keep your weight under control. It can also help combat high blood pressure, osteoporosis and treat depression, as well as prevent colon cancer, stroke, diabetes and heart disease. Bottom line: Find a way to incorporate exercise into your daily routine, so you can be as healthy as possible as you get older.

3. Make Sure You Get a Good Night's Sleep

Getting a good night's sleep on a comfortable mattress is essential to your health. If you're not sleeping well, consider eating a small bedtime snack like oatmeal, whole-grain cereal with milk, or drinking some chamomile tea. The problem could also be your mattress.

That's why, if you're constantly tossing and turning at night, your mattress is more than eight years old, or you wake up feeling tired, sore or stiff, it might be time to get a new mattress. A new mattress can help improve attention, boost energy levels, and provide overall good health. If you're a little strapped for cash, consider convenient financing and delivery options from retailers like Jerome's.

4. Avoid Sugary Drinks

Sugary drinks like juices and sodas should be avoided at all costs if you want to start living a healthier lifestyle, as these drinks offer little to no nutritional value. Too much sugar can leave you hungry, tired and irritable. Instead, opt for water, which offers countless benefits for the body and your overall health. It lubricates the joints, delivers oxygen throughout the body, regulates body temperature, and cushions the spinal cord, the brain and sensitive tissues. It also helps flush waste, maintains blood pressure, prevents kidney damage, and helps with weight loss.

5. Take Care of Your Mental Health

A lot of people think physical health alone makes you healthy, but your mental health can have a significant effect on your physical health. So, make sure you're taking care of your mind as well as your body. Getting outside in nature can help improve both your mental and physical health.

Take a walk or hike and get your daily dose of Vitamin D. Additionally, do things that make you feel good, like reading a book or listening to your favorite songs (and dance it out!). It can also help to reach out to trusted friends or family members if you're feeling down. Just do whatever you need to do to lift your spirits.

Taking the Next Step

Living a healthier lifestyle isn't always easy, but taking things one step at a time is crucial. Start with one or more of the above tips and then work your way slowly to the next one. Don't try to change your whole lifestyle in one day or you might get overwhelmed and slip back into old, unhealthy habits. Instead, start with what you think you can reasonably do and achieve and take it from there.

  1. This is a pretty comprehensive list. I think the exercise and eating healthy, are basically a foregone conclusion these days. Unfortunately, I don’t think we discuss mental health enough. You discuss it, and I’m glad you include it in your list. Its obvious mental health has become a serious issue, and if problems go unresolved, people are liable to lash out. I think meditation has become a little more accepted these days, and I wish more people would consider giving it a try. It’s not as “alternative” as people think. There’s plenty of science showing the benefits, and good it can do. It doesn’t take long, and it’s virtually free. A healthier lifestyle should always include a healthy mental aspect.
