I didn’t even know people could make brownies from a box growing up as my mom always made homemade brownies. And let me tell you, homemade fudge brownies are way better than boxed brownies by far!
When I left home, I copied down a bunch of my mom’s recipes, and you can tell that this brownie recipe has been used many, many times over the past 25 years.
And today, my daughter, Tatym uses my recipe box more than I do! In fact, she made a batch of homemade fudge brownies just so I could blog about them!
Homemade Fudge Brownies Recipe
- 1 cup margarine (my mom always melted the margarine in a saucepan; I use the microwave)
- 1/3 cup cocoa
- 2 cups sugar
- 4 eggs
- 2 cups flour
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 cup chopped nuts (optional – I never add these)
Mix ingredients together. My mom would bake her brownies in a jelly roll pan, but I prefer to use a 9×13 glass pan to make the brownies a bit thicker. And be sure to grease the pan or else the brownies will stick to the pan! Bake at 350 degrees for 15-18 minutes. Do not overcook or else the brownies will be dry. I actually prefer these fudge brownies a tad undercooked so they are more “fudgey”. We usually just top with a dust of powdered sugar, but you can frost them if you like. This peanut butter frosting is really good on brownies, too!
Tatym chronicled the making of these homemade fudge brownies to show you just how easy this recipe is to make:
