In need of a upgrade when it comes to your home? Making renovations to your home is not only a great way to improve ROI, but can help build your project management skills and be happier with your living situation overall.

However, at the same time, any renovation project is not cheap, and often times the estimated budget is way lower than the actual budget spent on the renovation project. You may encounter surprise costs along the way or worse, not able to afford the necessary fixes.

But, don’t worry! Below are six renovation ideas that won’t break the bank and will actually help make your house look like a million dollars!

6 House Renovation Ideas

1. Paint Your Old Furniture

If you’re looking to spice up old furniture, such as your bed’s headboard or bedroom dresser, consider painting it an accent color or even tack on wallpaper. It’s a quick and cheap way to make the drab part of a room the new and exciting accent piece. Giving your bedroom and home an extra pop will help increase its overall appeal to you and your guests.

2. Increase Natural Lighting

Finding ways to incorporate natural lighting into your home is a great way to increase positive attitudes and emotions. An inexpensive way to do that is by installing glass doors in the bathroom, kitchen or living room. It’s also a great way to incorporate a modern style and even bring in accent colors and details to a room.

3. Landscaping

Scan your outdoor space and see what you can do to spruce up the area. This could be as simple as adding annuals or perennials flowers, adding lights to a backyard path or building a stone ledge or bench for a sitting area. Plants are a cheap way to help increase your curb appeal in the neighborhood.

If you want to tackle something bigger in your yard, such as a large shrub or tree, consider calling a specialist, such as an experience arborist or tree-care company.

4. Change the Doorknobs

Every detail of your house is important and most people don’t really give their doorknobs a second thought unless they’re broken. As such, changing your doorknobs is an easy and inexpensive way to add personality to your home. Changing your old, boring doorknobs to new ones that are works of art will instantly brighten your home, and make it look like a million dollars.

5. Caulk the Bathroom

Bathroom maintenance is a key for making your home more valuable. According to Consumer Reports, 42 percent of real estate professionals they surveyed, they said that the bathroom is “one of the most important rooms of the home to have in good shape.”

When inspecting your bathroom, besides keeping it clean, look to see if you can make simple fixes, such as caulking the bathtub/shower or installing a new mirror and/or light fixture. Simple fixes like that can help modernized an outdated bathroom.

6. Paint Outside Shutters/Panels

Take advantage of the warm weather outside and what improvements you can make to the exterior of your home. If you’re feeling ambitious and want to paint your exterior panels, be sure to first sand and wash the area to get rid of peeling paint. This will help the paint stick to the area better. This is also true if you plan on painting smaller areas, such as the siding or doors.

Also, when picking which paint to use, quality should be at the top of your list. Don’t be afraid to spend more because that price includes the longevity of the paint job and the less often you’ll have to touch up or repaint. When you go to paint, be sure to apply a coat of primer before adding the colored paint. Lastly, don’t forget to properly cover the landscape (grass, bushes, plants) when painting outside.

Keep these ideas in mind when looking for small renovation projects that won’t break the bank and more importantly, make your home look and feel like a million dollars.
