Taking Care Of Yourself During Difficult Times

Part of life is that we are all going to experience a wide range of difficult experiences at different times. If you can accept that, you are much more likely to then allow yourself to simply work with whatever life throws up, rather than finding yourself giving up. Part of that is knowing how to take proper care of yourself, even when things seem to be falling apart and you feel as though you can’t cope. In this post, we are going to take a look at some of the essentials of taking proper care of yourself when you are going through some dark times.

Focus On What You Can Control

Usually, the nature of difficult experiences is that they are inherently to do with things that are out of your control. Because of that, many of us suffer from this feeling that we are powerless. However, if you look at it in a slightly different light, this can actually be a powerful invitation to open up to the fact that there is much of life you don’t control – and to switch your focus instead to those things you do control. If you focus only on that, you are going to find it so much easier to deal with the situation at hand.

 

Figure Out A Routine

One of the best ways to try and move on when anything is going wrong in life is to work out some kind of a routine you can follow. It can be all too easy to simply let yourself fall into old habits of not really taking proper care of yourself and so on, but if you want to try and look after yourself you are going to need a routine to follow. It doesn’t have to be too full on, and if anything you should take care that it isn't. But as long as you have some kind of routine in place, you should be able to move on much faster and start to enjoy life a little bit more again for the little things.

 

Connect With Others

Many of us are guilty of shutting ourselves away when we are feeling bad or going through a difficult time. This can be a perfectly natural response, but it is also not quite the best way to approach things. If you want to look after yourself as well as possible, an important part of that is always going to be ensuring that you are connecting with other people at least a little. In fact, the more you get involved in a local community, the better you are going to feel on the whole, even if at first you find it difficult to do this. Over time, you are going to find that connecting with others is probably what saves you above all else.

Do Something You Enjoy

It might sound basic, but one of the best things you can do during difficult times is to simply make sure that you are doing something you really personally enjoy. It doesn’t matter what it is. It can be some hobby that you love or a particular book or TV show, or whatever else. But the important thing is to make sure that you are doing something enjoyable. If you do that, you will just be having so much more fun, and even if things are terrible you will be able to have some time each day where you are not thinking about it. That can be a huge help, and it can often be what saves you from completely going off the rails instead, which can happen easily.

 

Get The Practical Stuff Done

Something that is often true about the difficult times is that they can be situations where there are a lot of practical things to do. For instance, one of the worst experiences is when someone close to you dies, and there is always so much that you need to focus on here in real-world terms, even while you are grieving terribly for that reason. Do One Thing At A Time

Something positive about the dark times is that they do tend to force you to move slowly, which can actually be a great help. When you have to do only one thing at a time, it can mean that your mind slows down too, and you are essentially giving yourself a chance to relax as much as possible. You can also make a point of doing this, so that you are actively doing whatever you can to move a little more slowly. That is bound to help you out in a big way, and it’s one of those things that can help you to feel so much better about what is going on and your prospects for the future.

 

Practice Self-Compassion

It can be easy to start to hate on yourself when things are going wrong. But this is obviously not helpful in the long run, and it is only going to make you feel worse about yourself. Instead, you should aim to practice active self-compassion wherever possible. That means forgiving yourself for any mistakes, allowing yourself to feel what you need to feel, and doing everything you can to look after yourself in all those other ways we have listed above. The more compassionate you are with yourself, the more likely it is that you can come out the other side in one piece, so this is something that you are really going to need to focus on.
