12 Tips to Help You Save on Your Travel

The world is a kaleidoscope of beauty and it beckons you to travel to behold its beauty. Traveling, however, can be very expensive, and you may end up draining your wallet after every trip. Yet, there are ways by which you can travel without necessarily exhausting your savings — here are some succinct tips on how you can do it:

  1. Make the start of your holidays begin in the middle of the week! This is definitely a good idea, since flight tickets for weekdays are less expensive than flight tickets during weekends. You would surely save at the very beginning of your travel if you can save on your flight tickets. Tuesdays and Wednesdays usually have the cheapest flights of the week; hence, it would be good to book your flight during those days.
  2. Look for sweet travel deals on social media by joining travel groups. Facebook, for example, generally has local travel groups. You can join these groups and have yourself alerted if ever there are sweet travel deals for the taking.
  3. It is better to set up your own travel savings account. Your savings account should be almost inaccessible to you until you spend it for travel. In this way, you would not be tempted to pilfer your travel savings for other things.
  4. Watch out for gift cards or cash related to trips and travel. Sometimes some establishments offer cash gifts or gift cards if you visit them on your birthday or other event, like a honeymoon.
  5. Before traveling, have your phone unlocked or use a roaming SIM card. In this way, you can save on your phone calls and internet bills.
  6. Inquire from your bank and work out a debit or credit card program and strategy that would enable you to avoid foreign transaction fees when you are abroad.
  7. Invest in quality accessories that you need when travelling. One of the most important thing to bring is a backpack. How to choose a backpack is the first thing to ask yourself. What will you put in it? Where will you take it? Cheap brands may save you money, but a low-quality backpack could tear with constant use and you will need to buy a new one.
  8. Inquire about round-trip flight deals. Some round-trip deals or offers can help you save on your transport expenses. But don’t forget to check out one-way flights likewise. Sometimes, one-way flights are less expensive than round-trip deals. Hence, you should double check on this.
  9. You can also look for multi-leg flights. In this way, you can visit some places aside from the specific destination you really intend to visit. For example, if you are going to Rome and you are coming from Indonesia or Malaysia, you can choose flights offered by Ethiopian Airlines which would have layover in Addis Ababa. Ethiopian Airlines surely offers cheaper flights to Rome, based on my experience.
  10. Try to travel during shoulder periods or off-peak times. Surely, flights and accommodations are at their highest during peak seasons; but during off-peak seasons the prices of flights and accommodations plunge.
  11. Follow the six-block rule. Don’t eat at any restaurant within six blocks of a tourist spot, for the prices of food near it are surely doubly expensive.
  12. Lastly, you should connect with your long-lost friends and relatives before traveling. They could surely provide you with good advice on where to stay and where to dine. Moreover, they could offer you with immediate accommodations if you are going to travel to their place.
