If you’re like most people these days, you probably live in jeans during the cooler months of the year. This clothing item is versatile, suitable for all ages and tastes, comfortable, and can be dressed up or down according to the occasion. Plus, we even have many different color options and lengths these days to choose from.

However, finding the perfect pair of jeans isn’t as easy as it may seem. To help you navigate this potential shopping dilemma, read on for some tips for buying new denim today.

Consider the Different Styles You Can Choose From

For starters, it helps to understand the types of jeans available these days – and there are many! For ladies, there are low-rise, mid-rise, and high-rise options, with each type sitting in a different spot around the stomach or hips. Low-rise products must fit snugly at the hips so you don’t have a problem with a gap showing at the back.

Mid-rise jeans give you more structure around your middle and sit a bit higher. These tend to be comfortable for most people and suit most women’s body types. High-rise jeans sit higher on the body, usually coming in right around or just above your waist. Such options work well with tucked-in shirts or crop tops.

When buying men’s jeans, you’ll notice that there isn’t much difference in how high products sit, but there are decisions to make about the fit you want around your legs and hips. For example, you might choose the classic straight-leg fit, which has a cut that remains roughly the same all the way down.

Alternatively, you might prefer a slim fit, which means jeans hug the thighs, knees, and calves but then loosen a bit around your ankles. If you want a looser fit to give more room around your thighs, opt for the classic jean style, or go further and choose a relaxed fit jean. These ones have a fuller leg and seat, although you don’t want them to hang off your hips.

Women can choose from the above styles, too, but they also have extra options to deliberate on. For example, boyfriend jeans are another loose fit, with varying degrees of looseness and length, meaning there are options for petite women as well as tall ones. These jeans are meant to look like, as the name suggests, you borrowed them from your boyfriend.

If you want to go to the other extreme, you might like skinny jeans. These are the slimmest type of jean available (there are some for men, as well as ladies these days, too), and they are more fitted around the calves and ankles than many other silhouettes. Another option is the bootcut jean. This one has a subtle wide leg that refreshes and minimizes the clear flare shape that was so popular in the sixties and featured a big bell at the hem. Today, you can still buy flares, although they’re less available than other styles.

Try on Various Products

To buy the right pair of new jeans, make sure you try on lots of different options. Don’t just pick one style and choose different products and sizes from that, though. Instead, it pays to test different jean lengths, fits, and shapes to see what works for your body. You may be surprised about what you like when you do this. Often, we find that different things suit us than we expected. If you like a particular style but worry it won’t suit your body shape, look out for modified versions that will, such as a more relaxed skinny jean or a less baggy boyfriend product.

If, like many people, you’ve been wearing the same kind of jeans for years, you’re even more in need of upgrading your wardrobe with a new style and discovering all the latest options available.

Consider Other Practicalities

As you shop for new jeans, think about other practicalities, too. For instance, examine the strength of the denim and how long it might last, as well as details such as pockets, stitching, embellishments, zips or buttons, and the like. Consider the wash of the jeans, too. This color can vary from light blue to dark, plus we also have a range of other shades to choose from now, such as black, white, and bright or pastel hues. Think about what you want to wear jeans with and how casual you want them to look.

Lastly, always bring a couple of pairs of shoes with you when trying on jeans so you can see how products look with different types of footwear. For example, you might try them on with heels or dress shoes and some flats or trainers.

While it can be challenging to find the time and energy to search for the perfect pair of jeans, this investment will be worth it when you go home with items you can get a lot of wear out of for many seasons to come.
