People all over the world are reacting differently to quarantine. Being isolated and home-bound has panicked even the best ones among us. With physical and psychological pressure mounting in every household, financial challenges are standing right outside the door. However, with not much on our hands, online surfing and shopping currently seem to be the best possible activities. People are being laid off all over the world as we move a step closer to the recession. In such times, spending on anything that categorizes as a “want” could prove to be risky.

Challenges and Opportunities

Quarantine has brought more leisure time to people and they need something to fill it with. Shopping choices have shifted from style & fashion to staples & hygiene products. However, shopping could also be a matter of safety during the COVID-19 pandemic. The WHO has warned that banknotes may be a source to transmit the virus. Consequently, shopping malls are no more a safe place until this pandemic subsides. This has provided us with an opportunity to review our shopping habits and opt for sustainability & moderation.

Quarantine Shopping Tips

If there is one directive we all need to follow while being quarantined, that is to minimize human contact as much as possible. This leaves us with resorting to online shopping and contactless transactions. Even in these crucial times, retailers and restaurants are doing everything possible to give convenience to their clients and keep the business running. Thus, we do not need to abandon them either. Instead, we should take advantage of availing customized offerings, discounts, and free deliveries.

When the situation is inevitable to visit a physical store or pharmacy, make sure to maintain a distance of at least 1.5 – 2 meters. Wear a mask and gloves at all times while you are out and keep mobile wallets for payments. Shop during less popular hours during day time or go to the stores that operate 24/7. Also, choose small-scale stores or shops for your urgent shopping.

When you are ordering in stuff, whether groceries or food, tell the rider to leave the delivery at your doorstep. Make an online payment along with the delivery fee so that there is no exchange of banknotes between you and the rider. This may surprise you but packaging can also carry bacteria. Thus, while receiving any kind of package, remember to wear gloves and wipe the surface with a sanitizer or alcohol swab.

Many people are becoming a target of panic buying and hoarding stuff, thus leaving little to none for others. In our opinion, there is no need to stockpile for months. Plan a week or two grocery shopping and buy accordingly. It is important that we all bring rationality to our buying decisions.
