My top 3 picks for best home juicer machines!

You’re turning Scarlett Scarlett! Actually it was more like you’re turning Forest, Forest… green that is.

That’s how I felt when I began my 15 year long love of green juice. I have carried a bit of extra weight since I was 10 years old. I knew I needed a lifestyle change but really loved my greasy comfort foods. I had just watched the movie, Fat Sick and Nearly Dead and I saw the future, and the future was green. I decided that I wasn’t going to skip my good nutrients any more even though the thought of munching on some kale or chard was not appealing at all.

I began researching juicers in earnest. I learned quickly that there are three basic types of juicers…

1. Centrifugal Juicers

These spin rapidly while you grate your fruits and vegetables into a compartment with a strainer. This allows the liquid to go through while the pulp remains. I liked this best for harder produce like carrot and apple.

The first one I purchased was the Breville Juice Fountain. I really liked this one because of its ease of cleanup. I felt the juice that came out of it was delicious, if a bit grainy. It’s only delta for me was that I felt as though I wasn’t getting the most out of my leafy greens… sometimes I’d start my juice w just the kale and chard and almost no liquid would come out.

2. Masticating Juicers

The second category is masticating juicers. Strange word, masticating, but it means to chew… and that’s what this type of juicer does. It chews your produce using an auger. This is a much more efficient way of extracting juice from leafy greens. As compared to my centrifugal juicer, I noticed about 40% more juice.

Many juice aficionados prefer this method to centrifugal because the auger is slow-moving, which allows the juice to be extracted without heat coming from the friction (heat is said to degrade the healthful benefits of the juice).

After much research, I settled on the Omega J8006 is an established player in the juice game, and they basically build you an indestructible tank. Its relatively easy to clean and like I said, I’ve never had any indication of mechanical failure after over ten years of every day use.

My Pick: The Omega

3. Juice Press

The last type of juicer is the juice press. Believe it or not, these machines use a to extract the juice from your produce. You cut your material into smallish pieces and fit it into a special mesh bag. Then you engage the press and voila!!! Juice emerges without any friction related heat.

Juice purists swear by this method, and in my experience it does produce the most delicious pure juice of the three categories. That said, be prepared to spend some $$ as these are not cheap. I’ve always dreamed of The Pure Juicer but the more affordable second choice is also from Omega.

My Pick: The Omega Cold Press Juicer
