How to Decide When to Shop Second Hand and When to Buy New

At the end of the day there are some of us who really enjoy trying to stretch a pound to see just how far we can make it go. I have made it somewhat of a personal challenge. It has nothing to do with my personal income. I make a relatively good amount of money, but trying to stretch a pound has really helped me grow my current savings account much faster. There are plenty of ways that I have learned to save a pound or two over the years, and I am more than willing to share some of my best kept secrets with you right here in this post.

The Second Hand World
This is a world where deals are more popular than the current tabloids of Prince William and Kate. This is the world where I love to play and shop. You would not believe just how many great items people just get rid of. These items can be had for a much smaller price tag. It is just a matter of locating the places where you can buy high quality items second hand. There are a few words in that last sentence that you need to pay very close attention. Those words are, “high quality items.” There are plenty of second hand places where you can purchase items that are not high quality, and in some cases you may even me paying more than retail. This is not what you want to do. You need to locate the places that give you the most for your money.

Start Small
There is nothing wrong with wanting to go all out, and start buying up everything that you can get your hands on at second hand prices, but this would defeat the whole purpose. You need to start small. The best place to start buying second hand items would have to be the entertainment world. There are so many great pieces of entertainment out there that still have plenty of life in them. In fact, some of these pieces of entertainment may even be brand new to you, and that is where the real value really starts to add up quickly. Here is a good list of entertainment that you can often purchase at great savings, but only if you start purchasing this stuff second hand.

  • Movies
  • DVDs
  • CDs
  • Video Games
  • Cassette Tapes
  • Books

This is what it is like to start out small in the world of second hand shopping, and this is where you will learn just how much money you can save by purchasing things second hand. Don’t let your pride get in the way. In fact, you can just leave your pride at home in the closet when you choose to go out second hand shopping. It will only get in the way.

Moving Up
Once you get the hang of buying small things second hand, you can move up to some larger things. There are some things that people are already buying second hand, but they never even think of it this way. Things like homes and autos are often bought second hand, and you can bet that there will be quite a bit of savings with these purchases too.
