In this current job market, it can be very difficult to find and keep a steady job. Everyone is in search of stability when things can be so uncertain. That’s why saving up money has become so important to so many people; an emergency fund is needed now more than ever. Fortunately there are many ways to survive this economic situation. First and foremost, it is important to have a plan and be prepared if anything bad happens.

That’s why many people these days are either taking on second jobs or looking for part-time work. A little extra money can go a long way, and it will be very useful to have these skills and income streams if you lose your job down the road. You may even find something you love and change your career.

Working freelance

Many find having the option to earn the unlimited income of a freelance worker is a relief. As with any job, you have no choice but to work hard to reach your goals and quotas; the difference is, it is with your standards that you set it. As long as the market for your freelance work doesn’t decline, there will always be money to earn.

Freelance jobs can consist of anything from being an article or content writer to doing online administrative assignments for small business owners. Online options are great as a part-time alternative because you can save time and money commuting and can do it from the comfort of your living room. Most of these jobs are work-from-home positions, and often, the assignments are not very time consuming. As long as you are qualified to complete these tasks, this could be a great way to make some extra money.

Make your own product

If there’s some crafty talent you have, you could consider making and selling your own items. There are many available marketplaces used to advertise, buy, and sell goods today. Craigslist and Amazon are two very popular marketplaces to use, and Etsy is great for small home-businesses. You’ll basically be running your own very small business, which gives you the power to make as little or as much as you choose at your own pace and price.

Be a local handyman

If you’re good with tools, you can make money by helping others make home improvements or you could haul old furniture home and fix it up to sell (a trailer would come in handy here, if you have one or could rent one cheaply). Helping people move things, fix whatever’s broken, or remodel others’ homes can be a good income stream that you can do during your spare time. If you’re very good and are willing to take a risk, you could even buy a cheap house and fix it up by hand to sell at a profit. There are a lot of ways you can make money if you have some equipment and the knowledge necessary to work as a handyman.

The best part about these part-time jobs is that you don’t need much start-up cash to begin making money. Having a solid part-time job that works with your schedule also grants you an opportunity to earn extra income to support any extra financial issues you may run into or simply for leisure use.
