Sugar Cookie Bars Recipe

My good friend Susan, shared this recipe with me. Her boys love these and always request them for special school treats. The first time I made them, I followed the recipe exactly, but my family was a bit less than impressed. Maybe I did something wrong? Maybe they are just spoiled with my amazing sugar cookie cut-outs recipe that I normally make? So I played around with the recipe, and came up with my own version. Hope you enjoy it as much as my family!

  • Cookies:
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp sour cream
  • Frosting:
  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup half and half
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp almond flavoring
  • 1/2 tsp butter flavoring
  • Pinch of salt
  • Food coloring (optional)


  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Combine flour, soda, cream of tartar, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add egg, vanilla and sour cream; mix well.
  4. Slowly add in flour mixture, just until combined. Do not overmix during this step.
  5. Grease a 9x13 baking pan. Spread mixture evenly in pan.
  6. Bake 15-20 minutes until edges are slightly browned.
  7. Cool before frosting.
  8. For the frosting, cream together butter, half and half, flavorings and salt until light and fluffy. Slowly add powdered sugar. Add food coloring if desired. Frost cooled cookie base and cut into squares.
